Interlibrary Loans: Guidelines for External Libraries

Introduction

The following information is for institutions and organizations borrowing material through our interlibrary loan department. We do not lend material directly to external individuals. If you wish to borrow an item from JIBC, contact your library's ILL department to submit a request on your behalf.

We lend material to:

  • Academic institutions within Canada
  • Medical libraries participating in DOCLINE
  • Public libraries within BC
  • Special libraries within Canada

Interlibrary Loan Guidelines for External Libraries

What we lend

  • articles
  • book chapters
  • books
  • DVDs (academic libraries only)

Loan periods

  • books are due four weeks from the date of receipt at the borrowing library
    • one renewal is allowed, provided there are no outstanding holds on the item
  • loan period for videos varies depending on the show date (not exceeding two weeks)

Placing requests

  • send requests via DOCLINE, SHAREit, or email: ill@jibc.ca
  • please provide your library code with any request

Shipping

  • articles are sent by email
  • books are shipped by Canada Post
  • videos are shipped by courier (please provide your courier code)

Not for loan

  • CD-ROMs
  • entire periodical issues of periodicals
  • reference books
  • reserve materials
  • sound recordings
  • items acquired within the last year may not be eligible for lending

Charges

  • no charges for requests from BC ELN partner libraries
  • non-profit libraries within BC (i.e. government libraries, hospital libraries, public libraries): no charge
  • for-profit libraries within Canada (i.e. corporate libraries, law libraries, etc.): $15.00 per request (invoice to follow)
  • requests from outside BC: $15.00 per request (invoice to follow) or reciprocal rates
  • replacement charges: $40.00 minimum charge

Copyright Compliance

JIBC follows Canadian copyright law. We ensure that interlibrary loan requests which exceed copyright limitations are not fulfilled. Under the terms of the Fair Dealing Exception of the Copyright Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-42)  we cannot process requests for copies of more than 10% of a published work or one journal article per issue.
