LAWS-4003 - Capstone

Identify a Topic

To start your research, you must identify a topic in the field of Canadian law enforcement and public safety. This topic should be something that interests you personally, or a problem set within the context of your work (if you are currently working in the field).

If you would like to research a topic outside of a Canadian context, please speak with your instructor for approval.

Background Research

Once you have an area of interest, do some background research into the topic. Background research can help you:

  • Identify key concepts, ideas, themes, and issues to research further.
  • Determine if your topic is researchable. (Is there enough research to support your project?)
  • Explore available source types. (What type of information will you need to support your research, and where can you find that information?)

The sources you use for your background research may not end up in your final assignment. This step is meant to help you better understand the context of your research, so it's okay to use a variety of academic and non-academic sources.

Research Ethics

All research used in your assignment must be ethically obtained and credited. Failure to cite secondary sources is considered plagiarism.

Any assignment planning to collect primary data must first obtain permission from the JIBC Research Ethics Board. If you intend to conduct primary research speak with your instructor as soon as possible.
