Adding Ares to Blackboard

When you are working from a blank Blackboard course shell, you need to manually add Ares. 

Follow the instructions on this page to add Ares to the left-hand menu of a Blackboard course. Once Ares has been added, use the Adding Items to Ares page to add new items to Ares, or the Cloning Items in Ares to clone items from a previous Ares course.

How to Add Ares to a Blackboard Course (Classic)

Follow the steps below to add Ares to a course in Blackboard Classic. 

  1. Select the (+) plus button on the top left of the left-hand menu and select 'Tool Link'.

  2. Add Tool Type: ARES_LTI. We suggest naming the Tool 'Course Readings' or 'Course Materials'. Select 'Available to Users'. Click Submit.

  3. The Course Reading link is now available in the left-hand menu of your Blackboard course.

  4. When you click on 'Course Readings', you will come to a blank page requesting you to ‘Choose a semester’. Select the correct semester from the dropdown menu and press ‘Create Course’.

  5. You now have a blank Ares instance attached to this course. Next, you need to add new items to Ares or you can clone items from a previous Ares course. Use the Adding Items to Ares page to add new items to Ares, or the Cloning Items in Ares to clone items from a previous Ares course.

How to Add Ares to a Blackboard Course (Ultra)

Follow the steps below to add Ares to a course in Blackboard Ultra.

  1. On the Course Content page, select the (+) plus button where you would like to place the Ares tool.
     


     

  2. From the dropdown menu, select Content Market.


     
  3. In the Content Market, select ARES_LTI by clicking the + icon in the bottom right corner of the tool.


     

  4. Back on the Course Content page, find ARES_LTI and (1) select the three dots on the right hand side and then (2) select the edit option.
     


     

  5. In the tool editor, change the title of the tool to either "Course Readings" or "Course Reserves". You can then make the tool visible to students and (optionally) add a description.
     


     

  6. The Course Reading/Reserves link is now available in the content of your Blackboard course.
     
  7. When you click on 'Course Readings', you will come to a blank page requesting you to ‘Choose a semester’. Select the correct semester from the dropdown menu and press ‘Create Course’.
