Ares Course Reserves: Cloning Items in Ares

A Guide to Ares - JIBC's electronic course reserve system

Clone Items in Ares

You can clone any or all items from past iterations of an Ares course. This means you do not have to resubmit items to Ares each semester.

The library manually clones all courses before the start of each semester. If you open your Blackboard course and Ares has not been cloned yet, you can create an Ares instance and clone items from one of your past courses.

Detailed instructions for cloning reserve items are on this page. For all other actions, please review the PDF document below.

How to Clone a Course or Individual Items in Ares

Below are steps for how to create an Ares instance for your Blackboard course and how to clone/copy items from a past course.

If you would like information on cloning items only, please skip to Step 4.

  1. When you open Ares from your Blackboard course, if you are met with a blank page requesting you to ‘Choose a semester’, this means Ares is not yet set up for this course.

  2. Select the correct semester from the dropdown menu and press ‘Create Course’. You now have a blank Ares instance attached to this course.

  3. Next, you need to add new items to Ares or you can clone items from a previous Ares course.

  4. Select “Add Reserve Items” in the Ares Course Menu:

  5. You will now see a list of courses you have access to. Select “Import Items” beside the course you want to import readings from:

You should see a list of selectable readings:

  6. Select the readings that you would like to import to the new course and click “Import Items”.

  7. Items that are Pending Activation will be sent to us to activate, and we normally activate them within 3 days. For more information on an item's status, please see the 'General Information' page.
