Writing Skills

Learn about academic and technical writing, different types of papers, grammar, punctuation, and other writing skills.

Introduction

Welcome to the Academic Writing Skills Guide. Writing is an essential skill for success in your studies at JIBC and in your professional life. This guide is designed to support students at all levels of study, from those writing their first academic essay to those preparing a final capstone project.

You’ll find resources on a wide range of writing styles and expectations, including academic, business, and technical writing. Academic writing is used in essays, research papers, and reflective assignments, while business and technical writing may include emails, reports, procedures, and workplace documentation.

Use the tabs to explore topics such as writing structure, grammar, writing style, proofreading, and inclusive language. The goal is to help you strengthen your writing skills and build confidence in communicating clearly, effectively, and appropriately in a variety of post-secondary and professional contexts.
