Introduction to Inclusive Language

Language is powerful. Words impact people and make direct and indirect statements about whether a person is included or excluded from their community. The JIBC is committed to safer communities and a more just society. We encourage everyone to explore the tabs on this guide and become more conscious of the impact language has on everyone in our community. Inclusive language encourages people to review the language they use and is used around them and reflect on how that language can be harmful to others, regardless of intent. Being aware of and changing our words is a small and simple way to create respectful and inclusive communities.

Because language is always changing, this guide is designed to encourage you to explore and remain up to date with the most inclusive language.
