How to Format Tables and Figures - Tutorial

All images, tables, and figures must include a caption and a reference list entry. The reference list entry reflects the type of source the table or figure was taken from.

Figures refers to any images that are not a table.

  • Tables and figures either appear within the body of your paper or on separate pages after your references page. If on separate pages, tables come before figures.
  • Tables and figures require a table or figure number, title, and a caption.
    • The number (e.g., Table 1 or Figure 1) appears above the table or figure in the left-margin and in bold.
    • The title is one double-space below the table number in italicized font.
    • The caption is descriptive, double-spaced, and appears immediately underneath the table or figure.
    • The caption begins with the word Note. in italics, followed by a description, the source information, and the copyright information at the end. In the Note. use Adapted from if you made changes to the table or figure; use From if you reprinted it exactly as found.

Copyright - Can you Copy Images?

You may reprint or adapt without permission if your use is considered “fair” as long as you credit the work with a copyright attribution.  Generally speaking it is likely fair use if it is for use in an academic work and not for profit (e.g. a paper for a class) (APA, 2020, p. 388).
